What Gear Do I Need?

Ok, so you are seriously considering taking one of the workshops. What gear do you need, what would I recommend, etc. I’m going to break this info down into two sections, one for beginner, one for advanced.

Beginners Workshop:
Ok, so let’s get some things out of the way. First, you need a DSLR.or fully manual capable compact. There is no way around this one, it’s required. If you don’t own one, sure, you can borrow one from a friend or rent one. I would recommend that if you don’t personally own one yet, that you go ahead and make the jump. The added bonus with that is you’ll be learning with the same camera you’ll be using when you are out in the wild all on your own. So it’s a good idea to have the same piece of equipment at the workshop incase you need help with it.

Bring whatever lenses you have, a memory card that can hold at least 200 images, and a fully charged battery. We will be shooting a few hours each day.

Now, if you are in the market to buy a DSLR… what should you get? That’s a loaded question. Sound advice would be to recommend what they call an “entry level” camera body and lens. That way you can used to handling the camera safely, all the way down to getting good at sticking the lens cap back on without it smacking the front element of your lens. You don’t want to go blow a few grand on new gear that you don’t know how to handle and muck it up with a pair of unexperienced hands. If you really like the way photography tastes going down after you have a few miles on ya, well… then you can really start investing in the good stuff. Do not get too consumed with gear though. The quality of photographs and the photographer are not gear dependent, I promise, and you’ll learn that real fast in this class. So don’t worry about showing up to class with something that looks like it was made by NASA’s top engineers, you just need a DSLR with a lens on it. If you have more questions, please use the contact form to send my your thoughts. For those who ask about brands, I’m not a brand pusher, but from the simple fact that Canon and Nikon make quality products, a large variety, great support, and a huge following, I’d have to lean to one of those two.

Oh, and buy a bag for your nice new camera. You don’t want it rolling around in your car and you definitely don’t want to have to always pack it around without some padding around it. You’ve seen what happens to a cell phone without a cover on it, right?

Advanced Workshop:
You should definitely already own a DSLR, and a few lenses. You are all most likely gear freaks at this point. 😉

If you have a pocket wizard, go ahead and bring that along for the ride, but leave your lights at home, you’ll be rockin’ mine for the workshop.

A couple memory cards, a setup that will allow you to take 400-500 images. A fully charged battery. It’s gonna be a long day of shooting.

Review:
I know how confusing this stuff can be for a fresh set of eyes, so please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you all at the workshops!
